Land as the First Teacher: Uncovering the Curriculum Outside

As human beings we have a reciprocal relationship with the planet that transcends what we can know only from our minds in the abstract world of the classroom. When the outdoor environment is a respected partner in learning, children come to understand their responsibility to act in caring and sustainable ways both in their personal and global contexts. These concepts are embodied in the Land and are expressed by Indigenous people all over the planet through unique and varied ways of knowing. Experiential, outdoor play and learning can support students of all ages in developing lifelong relationships with the Earth and its community through this integrative approach to curriculum.
