Intended Learning Outcomes

The session purpose is to:

  • further support the implementation of the English Language Learners’ (ELL) policy, as it relates to  Steps to English Proficiency (STEP) implementation and Renewed Math Strategy;
  • access ministry supports to implement ELL policy requirements that meet the needs of ELL so that they are able to learn the Ontario curriculum at the same time as they are learning the language of instruction;
  • use the STEP resource to inform responsive teacher practice that supports ELLs;
  • support professional learning for effective educator practice that ensures equity for ELLs; and
  • build leadership (i.e. school and system leaders) capacity to facilitate collaborative inquiry and to act effectively in their instructional leadership roles.


After the session participants will be able to design the professional learning necessary for their districts to support the ELL policy. They will also have a deeper understanding of the STEP resource and how to use it to improve student learning.
